2003-11-05 I am much impressed by the wildly racist packaging of Pantene's new Relaxed and Natural Hair Care Line, Created for Women of Color. I will refer to it as S.A.M.B.O. (Strong And Multiculturally Beautiful, Ooo) for short. Anyway, I was watching television the other day, and suddenly a new Pantene commercial came on, a commercial for S.A.M.B.O., as it turned out. We were shown a wretchedly unhappy black woman with straightened hair, and then we were shown an exuberant black woman with Relaxed and Natural hair. The voiceover implied that the woman had in fact been wretchedly unhappy her entire life, probably as a result of a complicated babydaddy situation, UNTIL SHE DISCOVERED S.A.M.B.O. At the end of the commercial, a picture of the shampoo bottle flashed on the screen--a picture of the sleek, chocolate-brown shampoo bottle. Of course. So that white women will know to take the white bottles of Pantene and black women will know to take the brown ones. Because black women don't know how to read. In fact, neither do white women. Women in general have trouble reading. Good God.
